FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q:  What causes tooth discoloration?

A:  Discoloration may be the result of genetics, medication, poor oral hygiene, aging, smoking, certain foods and beverages, or a combination of these factors.

Q:  Who is a good candidate for tooth whitening?

A:  People with most types of discoloration can achieve lighter teeth through the in office whitening procedure.  The type of stain you have will affect how much whitening you will experience.  Ask your dental professional how much whiter your teeth can be.

Q:  Is this whitening procedure safe?

A:  Absolutely!  When used under the supervision of your dental professional, the procedure is safe and will not harm teeth or gums.

Q:  Will I have to wear a mouth tray?

A:  In-office whitening does not require the use of a mouth tray.  This is a one-visit procedure that your dental professional will perform.  There will be custom trays for you to use at home to touch up as desired.

Q:  How long does the whitening result last?

A:  Once you achieve your desired results, you never go back to your original shade.  However it is highly recommended you continue to whiten at home with custom whitening trays provided to you by our practice.

Q:  What is the maintenance of tooth whitening?

A:  Most people like to “touch-up” every 1-3 years or before an important social event.

Q:  How does this affect my dental treatment?

A:  It is recommended to whiten teeth prior to dental treatment on teeth that will be visible in your smile.  It is necessary to stop whitening 2 weeks prior to your dental work for a “settle-in period” so your dental treatment can be precisely matched to your new whitened shade.

Q:  Will I be sensitive when I whiten my teeth?

A:  Some people experience temporary sensitivity.  We provide a fluoride treatment after your in office whitening and give you a tube of Fluoridex toothpaste which helps minimize any temporary sensitivity when you continue to whiten at home.
